Description

Note: Due to ongoing Covid-19 related travel restrictions meaning data collection has had to be suspended and a planned update to the survey methodology during 2020, a temporary gap in the reporting of the domestic tourism monitors has resulted. This disruption means the National Tourist Boards will be unable to publish detailed results from the GB Tourism Study (GBTS) and Day Visitor Study (GBDVS) for 2020 or Q1 2021 and any data from this period will only be published after a thorough review to ensure they meet necessary quality standards. We shall resume fieldwork as soon as domestic travel guidelines ease and anticipate being in a position to commence the delivery of Q2 2021 summary data at some stage during Q3 2021 (barring any unforeseen circumstances).

The Great Britain Day Visits Survey started in 2011 and was conducted using an online methodology. Over 35,000 interviews are conducted with adults aged 16 and over resident in England, Wales and Scotland during 52 weekly survey waves.

Accuracy and Reliability

Many measures have been taken to ensure that the data collected in GBDVS are as accurate as possible and that subsequent analysis stages provide results which are as representative as possible of the GB adult population. Normally in a large survey of this nature the confidence intervals associated with key results are calculated to provide an indication of the accuracy of these findings. However in any survey conducted through an online panel approach, rather than being selected at random, the respondents ‘opt-in’ to the survey. Therefore the approaches normally followed to calculate confidence intervals cannot be relied upon to provide a complete measure of the accuracy of the survey findings and only indicative estimates of the accuracy of GBDVS can be provided.

Coherence and Comparability

The equivalent data from the GBDVS relating to Wales, England and the UK is also available through the GBDVS browser.

Accessibility and Clarity

This data and summary report are also available from VisitScotland.

Relevance

In the survey a tourism day trip is defined as:

• Taking part in one of a pre-defined list of activities (based on international tourism definitions)

• Spending 3 or more hours out of the home on this activity

• The activity not being something that the respondent does “very regularly”

• The activity not being carried out in the place that the respondent lives or, if the trip started in the workplace e.g. socialising after work, the place the respondent works

• The exception to this was trips to visitor attractions, live sporting events and special public events, which are all counted as tourism day trips even when in the place of residence, provided they fulfil the other three criteria.

Timeliness and Punctuality

This data is updated annually.

Revisions

This data is not routinely revised. Any revisions in exceptional circumstances will be carried out in accordance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
